In men's college basketball, eighth ranked North Carolina clinched the regular season ACC title with a road win over rival Duke, 76-to-72.  The Tar Heels led throughout the game, although the Blue Devils kept it close most of the way.

Dean Smith, the legendary men's college basketball coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has passed away. He was 83 years old.

"Coach Smith passed away peacefully the evening of February 7 at his home in Chapel Hill, and surrounded by his wife and five children," his family said in a statement. "We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as arrangements are made available to the public."

Induction into a sports Hall of Fame is a reflective moment for any athlete or coach. Nine Tar Heel players or coaches are in the Basketball Hall of Fame, and eight of them either had some connection to Dean Smith or were Dean Smith. And none missed the opportunity to thank him during their acceptance speeches:

Michael Jordan: “Coach Smith… what else can I say about him? He’s legendary in the game of coaching.”

The North Carolina Court of Appeals will begin hearing arguments Thursday over a dispute between the Atlantic Coast Conference and the University of Maryland. The school has been a member of the conference since its inception 60 years ago, but announced last fall it plans to depart to the Big Ten Conference. However, prior to that decision, a majority of Presidents from ACC member schools voted to increase the exit fee for departing schools. The amount jumped from about $20 million jumped to $52 million.

The NC State Wolfpack will take the field tonight for their biggest game of the season to date. The Clemson Tigers are third-ranked in the national polls and an early contender for the national championship.

The Duke Mens Lacrosse Team won its second national title.

The Duke men's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to beat Syracuse 16-10 for its second national title.  The Blue Devils began Monday's game by missing their first 11 shots on goal.  That allowed the Orange to race out to a 5-nothing lead into the second quarter.

Duke head coach John Danowski said he felt the pressure of the game was a factor.

Everyone knows that NC State, Duke, and UNC can play basketball. But how well do they dance?

The 60th ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament is underway, where North Carolina’s Big Three will compete with other conference teams for the championship.  We found videos of all three North Carolina schools performing the Harlem Shake – a dance that has made waves on the internet in recent weeks.

The Atlantic Coast Conference is adding a new member. Notre Dame will join the league in the next few years – as soon as it can get out of its current league, the Big East.  But Notre Dame’s most celebrated athletic program, football, isn’t coming with the other sports. Instead, the Fighting Irish football program will remain an independent, in order to retain its ability to negotiate its own TV contract. When Notre Dame eventually joins to ACC in all other sports, it will bring the number of conference members to 15 – and again expands the league’s geographic footprint.

It’s March Madness for college basketball fans.  But teams of student entrepreneurs gathered in Durham this week for Start-up Madness.

The men's Atlantic Coast Conference regular season champion will be decided tomorrow. That's when North Carolina will travel up Tobacco Road to take on rival Duke. The two teams are tied for first place going into the final regular season game. Speaking on an ACC teleconference this week, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said it's been a challenge to get to this point.

The ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament tips off tomorrow in Greensboro.

Jeff Tiberii: For the 13th consecutive year the event takes place at the Greensboro Coliseum. This season the conference boasts 3 of the top 10 Women’s teams in the nation: Duke, Miami and Maryland. Meanwhile, UNC-Chapel Hill finished fifth in the A-C-C during the regular season. Head coach Sylvia Hatchell has led her team to eight of the last 10 Tournament Championship games.

This weekend the Greensboro Aquatic Center hosts the first prominent event in its brief history. The facility is serving hundreds of local people each day while trying to also gain attention on the national swimming stage.

Duke is leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in a statistic not frequently reported in the sports pages. The Blue Devils topped the league in the percentage of student-athletes who graduated in 6 years.

97 percent of the student-athletes who came to Duke in 2004 graduated by 2010. That ties Boston College for the best rate in the ACC. The NCAA graduation rate does not take into account student-athletes who leave school in good academic standing.

The Atlantic Coast Conference recently announced a plan to add Syracuse University and the University of Pittsburgh to its ever-growing roster of schools. Proponents say growth is inevitable, as conferences around the country expand to maximize television contract money. Detractors say more schools means less emphasis on tradition, and that student athletes get lost in the shuffle.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse are joining the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC announced yesterday it's council of presidents unanimously voted to accept the two Big East schools, expanding the conference to 14 universities. ACC commissioner John Swofford says the council started exploring the idea of expansion more than a year ago.

John Swofford: "We had had, I'll just say, a double-digit number of schools that had reached out to us. What we try to look at is to try to ensure the conference's viability for years to come and our strength moving forward."
