Raleigh Transit Authority Sued For Rejecting Bus Ad Showing Caged Pigs

The Humane Society of the United States is suing the Raleigh Transit Authority after the city rejected a bus advertisement showing pigs in cages. 

The ad proposal meant for the outside of buses has photos of pigs in gestation crates with the words, "How would you like to spend the rest of your life in a space as small as a bus seat?"

Smithfield Ending Controversial Hog Crates

Smithfield Foods says it will stop using so-called ''gestation crates'' by 2017.

Animal rights advocates are welcoming news that Smithfield Foods is on track to phase out the use of small metal crates for pregnant hogs. The company said in a statement it will end the practice by 2017. The non-profit Humane Society filed a federal complaint against Smithfield a month ago.

HSUS: NC Breeders Need Oversight

Animal welfare advocates say Wednesday's fire that killed eight dogs at a commercial breeding facility near Selma could have been avoided by better regulation.   Kim Alboum is North Carolina Director for the Humane Society of the US.  She says state regulation of commercial breeders is so lax, no one even knows how many are in business here. Alboum says the lack of oversight makes North Carolina an attractive place for puppy mills:
