Legacy Society: Deferred and Planned Gifts

Members of the Legacy Society have made provisions for North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC in their financial and/or estate plans that will help ensure that the station remains a strong voice of North Carolina news and information.

Planned or deferred giving enables you to arrange charitable contributions in a manner that maximizes your personal objectives while minimizing the after-tax cost. We call them planned gifts because they are directly connected to your financial and/or estate plans. They are also called deferred gifts because, even though they are given today, North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC will not realize their benefit until some time in the future.

North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC is a department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. All planned and deferred gifts are made to the university and designated to North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC.

We separate deferred or planned gifts into two categories:

Life Income Gifts

Other Planned Gifts

Life income gifts allow you to make a substantial gift to WUNC while still retaining the income for life produced by the asset. Other planned gifts may benefit you in your estate and financial planning.

Recently the House of Representatives passed legislation, the Temporary Tax Relief Act of 2007 (H.R. 3996), that includes a one-year extension of the Individual Retirement Account (IRA) rollover provision and several other charitable giving incentives.

The bill changed the termination date of the IRA rollover provision to Dec. 31, 2008, allowing donors another year to take advantage of the giving incentive. The version of the IRA rollover provision is exactly the same as current law, which means that:

  • Donors must be age 70½
  • There is a $100,000 annual gap on IRA rollover gifts
  • Gifts must be made directly to a charitable organization

WUNC is grateful to the many donors who make special year-end gifts that they plan with their tax-advisors, or are recognized as Legacy Society members for including provisions for WUNC in their estate plans. If you, or your financial advisor, has questions about WUNC's management of special contributions, please contact Jennifer Fusco at (919) 445-9112.

If you have questions about any of these gifts, please contact: Jennifer Fusco, Principal Gifts Manager, (919) 445-9112, jfusco@wunc.org

WUNC is a department of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization.
