Understanding Poverty

Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award recognizes North Carolina Voices: Understanding Poverty series for journalistic excellence

A two-week radio series on North Carolina Public Radio- WUNC April 11-22 2005

More than forty years ago, North Carolina started its own war on poverty. Today, more than a million people in the state live below the federal poverty line. Who are they? Why are they poor? And what has changed since the 1960s?

Support for North Carolina Voices: Understanding Poverty comes from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Doug and Peggy Abrams, the Julian Price Family Foundation, Maupin Taylor P.A., the Michael and Laura Brader-Araje Foundation, and the North Carolina Humanities Council.
