North Carolina Voices: Global Health Connections

North Carolina Voices: Global Health Connections explores the efforts of people in North Carolina to improve health around the world.

Scientists are engaged in research to find ways to reduce the spread of diseases like Malaria and HIV/AIDS.  North Carolina doctors, nurses, and other volunteers travel around the globe to help run hospitals and create prevention programs.  In turn, these global efforts yield expertise, educational opportunities, and financial resources back in North Carolina.

For the first installment of the series, health reporter Rose Hoban traveled to Malawi and Zambia in southeastern Africa.  These are two of the world's poorest countries.  In both countries, maternal and infant mortality are high, life expectancy is short, and the AIDS epidemic continues to take its toll.  The health care systems in both places struggle with a lack of resources and a dearth of skilled personnel.

As the series continues, in addition to the audio you hear on-air and will find here, Rose will post a series of  entries at the Global Health Connections blog.  Shortly after each broadcast you'll find the radio audio on the main WUNC news page and archived here, too.
