We present the Tar Heel experience through sound, story, discussion, commentary and listener participation through calls. Apex Chemical Plant: We’ll have the latest on the fire at an Apex chemical plant that has forced evacuations and shut down schools in Wake County.

Sofia Quintero: Author, screenwriter and social advocate Sofia Quintero is the Carolina Circuit Writer’s 2006-2007 Artist-in-residence. She joins guest host Eric Hodge to talk about how she hopes to inspire creativity and social action using two oft-reviled forms of popular culture:  hip-hop and chic lit.

Kickin’ Grass: The members of Triangle-based band Kickin’ Grass are making a name for themselves with their carefully crafted songwriting and hard-driving homegrown bluegrass. They’ll be live in our studios in advance of their show tonight as part of WUNC’s Back Porch Music 30th anniversary concert series.

Lee Smith
Lee SmithLee Smith is one of North Carolina's most important literary figures. Her 12th novel is her first foray into historical fiction. "On Agate Hill" follows the life of the spirited orphan Molly Petree who calls herself a "refugee girl." We meet her on her family's ruined plantation in North Carolina and follow her to boarding school and motherhood in the mountains.  September 20, 2006  

Studying High School

As part of the North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC series "Studying High School" we took a look at how high schools were meeting the many challenges of educating its students. Branford Marsalis
bmarsalis.gifHe was born into a New Orleans family whose name is synonymous with jazz. But Branford Marsalis’s saxophone has played pop, funk and even classical music. Now the Durham-based musician is running a record label and spearheading efforts to build homes for musicians displaced by Katrina.
