Submit Your SOT Idea
Perfect Pitch
Ideas make SOT run, of course. And because we are YOUR public radio station and because we are YOUR show -- all about North Carolina and what matters to North Carolinians -- we like to hear ideas from YOU. However, it’s important to think an idea all the way through before pitching it to us. To help make the perfect pitch consider your answers to the following questions:
1. What is at the heart of your idea? i.e. a book, a personality, a news story, an event, an anniversary. . .
2. What is the angle or “take” on the idea? – i.e. something has changed, there’s breaking news, there’s a new voice on the subject, new research, people are buzzing about it, it’s happening for the first time . . . .
3. What kind of voices do you expect to/want to hear on the show? This could be answered with specific names or with the more abstract “someone who has climbed the mountain or written the song or grew up in the town or who has done the research. . . .”
4. In what way will these voices work together? Will they argue? Present two sides of a story, present nuanced views? Give us the background? Fill in the blanks? Add some humor?
5. Why do you care about this?
6. Why should or would other listeners care?
7. Is this a subject that includes callers? If so, what will the first caller say? And the second caller? And the third?
8. The show is three segments long, is your idea a one segment, two segment or three segment topic? Why? How will it sustain itself across several segments?
9. If this is a two or three segment topic how would you structure the show such that the conversation advances as the segments progress (and possibly within each segment?) For instance, would you begin with breaking news, go to history and finish with a personality?
10. What is the North Carolina connection?
11. Consider the host – is this something he would be interested in?
A perfect pitch answers all of these questions.
So, batter up. . .
You can use this form below to submit your SOT idea. Because of the volume of idea submissions we get we can't respond to all of them directly. A SOT producer will follow up with you if we need more information.
Thank you!
