Kay Hagan is the Democratic candidate for the United States Senate. An attorney, she is currently serving her fifth term in North Carolina's Senate, where she represents the state's 27th district. Hagan became a co-chairwoman of the State Senate Appropriations Committee in 2003.

She was raised in a political family: her uncle, Lawton Chiles, was the governor of Florida and a U.S. Senator. Her father, Lawton Chiles, served as the mayor of Lakeland, Florida. As an adult, Hagan served as Guilford County campaign manager for Governor Jim Hunt before entering politics herself.

Hagan spent most of her childhood in Florida. She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in American Studies in 1975. She met her husband, attorney Chip Hagan, while they were both in law school at Wake Forest University.
