Republican Elizabeth Dole is North Carolina's first female senator. She was elected in 2002. A Harvard Law School graduate, Dole is a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, among others.

Born in Salisbury, Dole attended Duke University as an undergraduate. She received her J.D. from Harvard in 1965. Dole worked in the Nixon White House and later, President Ronald Reagan appointed her Secretary of Transportation. She was Secretary of Labor under President George H.W. Bush and subsequently headed the American Red Cross.

Dole is married to Bob Dole, former U.S. Senator from Kansas and Republican nominee for President in 1996.
