Pat McCroryGovernor 2008
Republican candidate: Pat McCrory
By Laura Leslie

Pat McCrory has been the mayor of Charlotte since 1995, winning an unprecedented seven terms at the Queen City's helm.

He was born in Columbus, OH, but moved with his family to the Greensboro area as a child.  He got an early start in politics, winning an election at 16 to become student body president at Ragsdale High School.

McCrory earned a BA in Political Science/Education at Catawba College and got his North Carolina teaching certificate, but went to work at Duke Energy instead, occupying a range of positions over the years, most recently Economic Development Consultant. He won election to the Charlotte City Council in 1989, where he served three terms before winning his first mayoral race in 1995.

As mayor, McCrory advocated for a local sales tax to help fund mass transit, including the city's recently opened light-rail line.  He was a founding member and the first Chairman of the North Carolina Metropolitan Coalition. In 2003, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to the Homeland Security Advisory Council.
