Pet Food Bank Helps Feed Animals

A local nonprofit organization is trying to help feed animals in North Carolina. "Share the Love" Pet Food Bank distributes pet food to needy organizations. It collects food from companies that normally discard pet food if the bag is mislabeled or ripped, or the food is past the expiration date. Founder Scott Morgan says he's trying to help the animal rescues and shelters that are already in place get the food they need.

Scott Morgan: They're already working with the community. They are already seeing the demand and working with the families. So they just need a support mechanism and that's really what I'm trying to do. Basically, it's like what Second Harvest Food Bank does for humans. They're the liaison. They're the ones that gather it and do the work and then be sure it's accessible, and that's all I'm doing with pet food.

The Winston-Salem nonprofit has distributed more than 20-thousand pounds of food to 20 organizations. Morgan says he hopes to expand to Durham and the Hickory area soon.
