Durham Fights Crime with Playing Cards

Durham County is fighting crime with playing cards. The Durham CrimeStoppers will distribute decks of cards to inmates at detention facilities around the state. Each card profiles an unsolved homicide with the location and description of the case. Durham CrimeStoppers coordinator Corporal Marty Walkowe says they hope to distribute some of the decks in neighborhoods where the crimes occurred. He says he wants them to be used and seen.

Marty Walkcowe:  The last thing I want to do is hand the pack of cards to someone that will take them home, stick them in a drawer and forget about them.

The idea for the playing cards came from a similar program in Florida. Durham CrimeStoppers has a thousand decks nearly ready for distribution. Walkowe says the first cards will be sent to the Durham County Jail, the Polk Detention Center and Central Prison.
