New statistics released by the office of the North Carolina Secretary of State show that charities using professional fundraisers are netting much less money than usual. An annual report from the Charitable Solicitation Licensing Division shows that in 2008-2009 charities using professional fundraisers kept only about 41 percent of every dollar given. The fundraisers got the rest. The previous year, charities kept much more money -- an average of about 60 percent of every dollar given.
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall says it's a disturbing trend. But she says this year there was a bright spot in charitable donations in North Carolina.
"We were anticipating that the overall amount of dollars would probably go down given the economy but we were pleasantly surprised that folks were even more generous in these down economic times than they were in the prior year," says Marshall. "And that is a testimony to the generosity of the people of North Carolina"
Marshall says her office's website has detailed information on how much every charity pays professional fundraisers.
