Hiring Illegal Immigrants

The City of Winston-Salem is sending a message to private contractors that they may not hire illegal immigrants. City officials recently altered the language in the city's contracts with the private companies it hires. The new language won't alter any existing laws. But the contracts now state explicitly that anyone the city hires must obey federal immigration laws. Allen Joines is mayor of Winston-Salem.

"Hopefully it will just make it clear the expectation of the city with the companies that do business with us. And hopefully those companies will maybe take an extra step to verify residential status."

Like much of North Carolina, Winston-Salem has a fast-growing Hispanic population that includes illegal immigrants.
