Glen Edward Chapman was convicted of two murders and sentenced to death in 1994. Last November, a superior court judge overturned Chapman's death sentence and ordered a new trial. The judge cited false testimony by a Hickory detective. And he said the Hickory police department had covered up evidence that pointed to Chapman's innocence. Then yesterday, the Catawba County district attorney dropped all charges against Chapman. Frank Goldsmith has been Chapman's lawyer since 2002.
"This is the first time in my career of some 38 years almost of practicing law I've had a client released to freedom from death row. It doesn't happen very often."
Goldsmith says the fact that there won't be a new trial reflects on the misconduct by authorities in the case.
