New State Laws For 2011

State Senate (photo: NCGA)

Catherine Brand:  The New Year tomorrow will bring with it some new consumer protection laws and tax credits. Laura Leslie reports.

Laura Leslie:  As of tomorrow, state law will ban lenders from auctioning off the foreclosed homes of active duty servicemembers.  Insurance companies will be required to provide hearing aids for children.  And real estate appraisal management companies will come under stricter state oversight.

Another new law increases state tax credits for film and television production, and expands tax credits to digital media and green businesses.

The New Year also brings tougher rules for young motorcyclists.  If they’re under 18, they’ll have to take a safety course to get their licenses, and they can’t carry a passenger anymore.  But older drivers will get a break as the age cap for the 8-year driver's license goes from 54 years old to 66.  After that, licenses have to be renewed every 5 years.   Laura Leslie, NC Public Radio, WUNC.
