Budget writers don’t have a lot of extra money to work with this year, but they do have some big priorities – like reforming the state’s mental health and probation systems. That means less money for other areas, including raises for state workers. Governor Easley is proposing a 7% percent raise for teachers, but just 1.5 percent for other employees. House state personnel chair Linda Coleman says that’s unfair.
"That’s unfortunate, because when you look at where we are economically, that does not bode well for moral or for the economic status of the people who do our constituent work for us."
Coleman says lawmakers will most likely look for a more equitable way to distribute raises. House leaders hope to finish their spending plan by next week.
