Slowing Down Decision On High-Speed Rail

Eric Hodge: The Raleigh City Council is postponing a decision on a downtown route for high-speed rail. Dave DeWitt reports.
Dave DeWitt: If it is ever built, a high-speed train will leave Richmond, Virginia and enter Raleigh from the north. Where it goes once it gets near downtown however, is anyone’s guess at this point.
An option called NC-3 was the favorite of city staff and a Raleigh Passenger Rail Committee. It would have brought the train west of Capitol Boulevard. But residents of the Five Points neighborhood objected at a public hearing last week.
Rick Baker is the co-president of the historic Glenwood-Brooklyn neighborhood association.
Rick Baker: We were hoping the city would support these additional alternatives, but we were also hoping they would recommend puling NC3 off the table. So a partial victory for us and we would have liked to have a little more, too.
The City Council hopes to further explore the options with the state and federal departments of transportation. A high-speed train wouldn’t come online until 2017, at the earliest.
