Jeremy Loeb: More North Carolina students than ever will be in classrooms led by Teach for America teachers this year. It comes after the organization received a record number of applicants. Dave DeWitt reports.
Dave DeWitt: Teach for America teachers have been in North Carolina since the program was founded 20 years ago. It places recent college graduates in underserved districts. According to a UNC-Chape Hill study released in the spring, students in classes taught by Teach for America teachers did well or better than students taught by teachers who came from university schools of education. Erin Swanson-Oschwald is executive director of Teach for America in eastern North Carolina.
Erin Swanson-Oschwald: We were excited to see that both our selection model and the way we recruit andselect our teachers as well as the way that we support them is leading to strong outcomes in the classroom.
Teach for America teachers are active in Charlotte and Durham schools, as well as rural counties in the northeast. Nationally, about 46,000 people applied to Teach for America. About 4500 are part of this year’s new corps of teachers.
