Walter Davis Dies

Walter Royal Davis died on Monday

A major benefactor to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has died. Walter R Davis was 88 years old. He made millions in the Texas oil business, but he never forgot his Tar Heel roots. He grew up in Pasquotank County and never attended college. He became a truck driver in North Carolina before moving to Texas and starting an oil-transport business. After returning to his home state he quickly established scholarships for low-income students. He spent 16 years on the school’s Board of Trustees. A library at UNC-Chapel Hill is named for him. Davis died Monday night at his home in Chapel Hill. A funeral is scheduled for Friday.
