A renowned scientist and North Carolina native has been named the new chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill. Holden Thorp has been at UNC in various capacities for 15 years. Dave DeWitt reports.
Holden Thorp is a Carolina man, through and through. He grew up in Fayetteville and graduated from UNC in 1986. He went to Cal Tech for graduate school, but was lured back to Chapel Hill in 1993 to teach chemistry. Thorp moved swiftly and steadily up the administration ladder, first chairing the chemistry department and then serving as director of the Morehead Planetarium. He was named dean of the college of arts and sciences last year. Thorp’s greatest challenge as chancellor will be managing the university’s growth. The school will add about 3 thousand students by 2015. The new chancellor will also lead the planning and building of Carolina North, a 250-acre campus in Chapel Hill.
