Some Schools Beating Dropout Odds

Eric Hodge: Schools affiliated with the non-profit North Carolina New Schools Project continue to show great promise in helping fight the state's dropout problem. Dave DeWitt reports.
Dave DeWitt: When the State School Board released dropout rates for all schools earlier this month, it was good news. According to their data, fewer students were quitting school across the state.
The news is even better for students attending schools developed in partnership with the North Carolina New Schools Project. Students at schools like the Southern School of Engineering in Durham and the Rocky Mount/Nash Early College High School drop out at even lower rates. In fact, at 37 of the schools, not one student dropped out.
Those schools with an focus on letting high school students earn college credit did especially well. Of the more than 12-thousand students who attended an early-college high school last year, just 66 dropped out.
