Some smaller North Carolina universities have been in the news lately for their surprising sports victories. In the past few months, Barton College, Appalachian State, and Gardner-Webb all claimed noteworthy wins over bigger opponents. But most of the time small college sports are overshadowed by their neighbors in the ACC. That’s especially true at Guilford College, one of only a handful of North Carolina schools that compete in NCAA Division 3. It’s a classification that doesn’t award athletic scholarships and emphasizes a balance between academics and sports. And while athletics at Guilford may not be big business, that doesn’t mean it’s taken lightly. Dave DeWitt reports.
