The North Carolina zoo in Asheboro is opening a new elephant exhibit this weekend. It’s called the Watani Grasslands Reserve and it more than doubles the area in which the elephants can roam. The new facility will be one of the largest in the country. It also represents the very latest in keeping captive elephants. A state-of-the-art barn will allow elephants to pull their own shower cords… And a giant artificial scratching tree has already become a hit with the animals. Keeping captive elephants is expensive and controversial. Some animal advocates say elephants shouldn’t be in zoos at all, but should be moved to larger sanctuaries and away from people. Dave DeWitt reports.
