This week is Hurricane Awareness Week and forecasters are predicting an active hurricane season this year. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast calls for 12 to 16 tropical storms, including six to nine hurricanes. The projected forecast applies to the entire Atlantic basin. Mike Moneypenny of the National Weather Service in Raleigh says just because federal officials have classified this year's hurricane season to be near normal or above normal, that doesn't mean any of those storms will hit landfall.
"Even though it’s forecast to be normal or above normal 90 percent probability, that doesn’t give you a whole lot to go on because you can’t really start making hard and concrete plans till five days out when you know that we actually have a storm and have some idea where it’s going."
An average season has eleven named storms, including six hurricanes.
