Wright Update

Mark Schreiner at the Wilmington Star-News reports this morning that embattled Rep. Thomas Wright (D-New Hanover) failed to report more than $119,000 in campaign donations over the past 15 years. Mark cross-checked donors' contribution records with Wright's campaign finance reports. Here's a sample of what he found...
"The Star-News confirmed with donors that in five instances since 2004, checks worth $4,500 made out to the Wright campaign were cleared through banks but Wright never reported to election officials that he received the money. Another committee, which could not check its bank records Thursday, said it had no reason to believe that $2,500 in checks written to Wright's campaign from 2004 had not been cashed or deposited."
There's a lot more where that came from. Nice work, Mark!
Still no word on the progress of the state elections board's criminal investigation. But Wright could face charges if his omissions are found to be intentional. Given their scope and longevity, it's hard to imagine how you'd argue otherwise.
Responding for Speaker Joe Hackney, spokesman Bill Holmes says until the official investigation is completed, it would be "unfair and premature" to say anything about allegations made outside of it. No comment yet from Rep. Wright.
