Weekend Round-up

After a week like the last one - Jim Black's prison sentence, David Almond's resignation, and still no budget - there's plenty to talk about in this weekend's coverage.
Black fallout
The N&O's Matt Eisley looks at how the Black scandal relates to ethics changes under consideration in the legislature. And the Fayetteville Observer sat down with State Dem Chair Jerry Meek to talk about how the scandal could affect the next election.
Almond crunch?
The N&O's Dan Kane reports state House Dem and GOP leaders say they won't release emails or other records of Stanly Rep. David Almond, who resigned under a cloud Thursday. (Something tells me we haven't heard the end of this one.) Over at the Char-O, Mark Johnson and David Ingram report on the House GOP's reaction to the scandal within their caucus.
Budget blockade
The latest on the budget is that, while House and Senate Approps folks continue to make progress on how to spend money, the folks in Finance are no closer than they were two weeks ago on how to bring in the money in the first place.
The proposed land transfer tax continues to be a big stumbling block, according to Winston Salem's James Romoser and the N&O's Jerry Allegood and Dan Kane. (If you missed my story last week on the transfer tax, it's here.)
And the fun stuff...
-
Greensboro's Mark Binker takes a look at all the honorin' on Jones St. these days.
-
And the N&O's Rob Christensen says no wine was involved when he broke his leg in Paris recently.
