House leadership wasted no time today trimming some pork from the budget proposal.
The first substantive amendment heard in Approps this morning, run by Senior Chair Mickey Michaux (apparently at the behest of Speaker Joe Hackney) cut the following line items. Keep in mind, line numbers are flying, and I'm writing as fast as I can. I'll try to confirm later.
Drag Racing Museum - 1M - zeroed out and transferred to One NC (economic development) fund
Johnson and Wales University - 3 M cut down to 1 M
-- Of the two million freed up, 1M goes to a new "Defense and Security Technology Accelerator" to be a business incubator for Homeland Security industries - the rest apparently goes to promote the state's wine industry, though I haven't yet confirmed that.Natural Science Museum of Greesnboro - 1M allocation cut
--125K goes to Grassroots Science Museum Consortium, and the rest evidently goes to marketing for the High Point Furniture Market.Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum renovation cut in half, from 7.8M to 3.9M
Three projects at Winston Salem State zeroed out - Hill Hall Renovation, Diggs Gallery Renovation, and land acquisition - for a total of 11.8M.
-- 8 million of that went instead to Appalachian State for a total appropriation of 8.5M for a new Education Building. One million went to Western Carolina U's new Health and Geronotological Center, for a total earmark of 1.6M.
The amendment passed with nary a peep of protest.
Lots of other money being moved around here and there even as I write. Will update later.Comments? Drop me a line.
