Wed. late: Long's illness

The N&O reports tonight that a stroke was to blame for former Insurance Commissioner Jim Long's collapse today at the Legislative Office Building. Long reportedly lost consciousness, but was awake and speaking when he was rushed to Rex Hospital. Sounds like a good sign.
I have messages in at the NCDOI, but I'm not entirely surprised not to have heard from them yet. When I talked with spokeswoman Kristin Milam earlier today, she described the mood over there as "shaken." Long had retired Jan 9th after 24 years in that office. He stopped by today for lunch with his former staffers, and was on his way to his committee meeting (he was an appointed member) when he fell ill.
(Update: Just heard from Milam, who says the DOI is referring all queries to the Rex spokesperson.)
Long's wife has reportedly (and understandably) asked for privacy. Nonetheless, I know a lot of people in Raleigh, including me, are thinking of Jim Long tonight and wishing him a speedy recovery.
Comments? Drop me a line.
