Wed: Hoyle Out

Longtime Senate fixture and Finance co-chair-for-life David Hoyle (D-Gaston) says he won't run for a tenth term in 2010.
This just in from the AP's Gary Robertson:
"The 70-year-old Hoyle said it was time to retire after nearly two decades. He'll serve out the remainder of his term.
Hoyle's decision opens up a potential seat for the GOP to win next year. His district is considered to be leaning toward Republicans.
It also means the departure of another Senate political heavyweight. Former Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand announced last month he would leave by the end of the year to lead the state parole commission."
(And it ALSO means Senate pro tem Marc Basnight may need a new legislative roommate. He and Hoyle have shared a North Raleigh apartment for years.)
Lodging aside, this has to be tough news for Basnight. Hoyle and Rand are two of his closest friends, and his two most dependable allies in the chamber. If Rand's departure started a Senate power shakeup, Hoyle's departure pretty much completes it.
More later on this.
