Wed.: Bad news for NC papers

Both the N&O and the Charlotte Observer rolled out massive voluntary buyout programs today.
The N&O is offering packages to about 40% of their employees, including all full-time newsroom employees. Managers wouldn't specify what the target might be.
Charlotte's offer extends to the entire staff. The target there is around 75 positions.
It's not the worst possible scenario, of course -- voluntary beats the heck out of involuntary. And both papers say they'll manage the buyouts judiciously to protect coverage. But for my many friends in McClatchyLand, it's still a staggering number, and I'm sorry to hear it.
Comments? Drop me a line.
