Update: NCSU Easley Docs online

If you're following this story, you may want to check out the documents NCSU is providing to the Grand Jury. I'm still reading through, but so far, I haven't seen the proverbial "smoking gun" that would implicate the former Governor in any legal malfeasance. (Stress on the "yet.")
Not that there isn't some good stuff. My favorite line so far is in a 4/25/05 email from then-PoliSci chair Jim Svara to Easley staffer Dan Gerlach:
"It was good to talk with you this morning. I suspect that this matter falls into the miscellaneous category in your job description."
But two days later, Gerlach emailed McQueen Campbell:
"I asked Jim to keep this between me and him, which is why people up the food chain don't know about the conversation."
Hmmm. While it becomes clear in later emails that the former Gov was aware his wife was being offered a position, it's not at all clear yet whether he was directly involved in creating that position or negotiating for her pay.
The N&O sees it differently. According to Andy Curliss's story, "E-mail messages show the creation of the job for Mary Easley was orchestrated in April and May of 2005 by the governor..." I guess I haven't seen those particular emails yet. If you have, clue me in, please.
More later, when I finish sifting through it all.
Comments? Drop me a line.
