MIKE EASLEY TO LEAD EFFORTS TO HELP STUDENTS GO TO COLLEGE NATIONWIDE
Former North Carolina Governor Easley will help take North Carolina’s nationally recognized Learn and Earn approach to college access and success to other states.
Today former Governor Mike Easley announced that he will be working to take North Carolina’s nationally recognized Learn and Earn initiative to other states. The governor will work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to focus on the crucial need to send more students to college to obtain their degree or a work credential.
Governor Easley’s partnership with the foundation will primarily entail taking North Carolina’s nationally recognized approach to college success to other states. The Learn and Earn initiative, developed by Governor Easley, includes 60 college-based Learn and Earn early college high schools, free on-line college credit courses for high school students from the University of North Carolina and North Carolina Community College systems, and the EARN scholars program, which provides eligible students the opportunity to attend college debt-free. The program was recognized as a national winner of the most recent Harvard University Innovations in American Government awards.
Easley will help support the foundation’s state education strategies, plans for educational innovation, and its emerging post-secondary agenda with the goal to double the number of students completing college in order to guarantee America’s success in the world economy. Easley’s partnership with the Gates Foundation resulted in the creation of over 100 new early college and redesigned high schools across North Carolina during Easley’s two terms as governor.
So now we know...
