Update: Basnight "Away"

Senate pro tem Marc Basnight will be "temporarily away" from Jones St. due to "family illness." That's according to a letter he sent out last night to Senators. The AP had it first:
North Carolina Senate leader Marc Basnight will be absent temporarily from the Legislative Building because of what his office says is an illness in his family. Basnight's chief of staff Amy Fulk says he is communicating with the office several times a day and hopes to return as soon as possible. Details of the illness weren't provided. The long-time legislator said in a letter to colleagues this week that he will return as quickly as he can. But he asked senators to work together to be sure legislation moves forward.
It's a rough time to be out, with budget negotiations just getting under way. But Basnight spokesman Schorr Johnson confirmed the Pro Tem is checking in several times a day, and "will have input in everything he usually would." The N&O has more details on that.
In the meantime, Johnson says Deputy Pro Tem Charlie Dannelly (D-Mecklenburg) will handle floor leadership as needed, the Approps co-chairs (Dalton, Garrou, Hagan) will work on the budget talks, and Majority Leader Tony Rand will keep doing what he always does -- namely, running herd on everything.
More if I get it...
