Sarah who?
President George W. Bush’s speech was good – dignified, warm, and self-deprecating, all at the same time. It was also very short. Still, you'd think his party’s historic VP pick might've merited more than two pro forma sentences.
“When he takes office next January, John will have an outstanding leader at his side. America will have a strong and principled vice president in the governor of the great state of Alaska, Sarah Palin.”
GOP Presidential would-be Fred Thompson, up next, started out like a bad stand-up routine, complete with moose jokes. But he hit his formidable stride in telling the story of McCain’s horrific experiences as a POW: “John McCain knows about hope. That’s all he had.” He got a standing ovation.
Quasi-Dem Joe Lieberman looked about as uncomfortable talking to the delegates as they were listening to him. (If the crowd shots were any indication, many of them weren’t, anyway.) But the crowd loved his attacks on Barack Obama – attacks Lieberman told his Dem friends in the Senate he wouldn’t make. Sooooo, about that chairmanship, Senator...
Trivia: More proof that slips of the tongue are a bipartisan issue. Obama earned GOP ridicule last month by inadvertently referring to his VP Joe Biden as “the next President.” Fred Thompson went a little farther up the pay scale tonight: “God bless John McCain, and John bless America.”
Bonus: McCain’s mom gives Joe Biden’s mom a run for "most endearing elderly mother in politics." (And no, she does NOT look 96.) Thompson said, “If Miz Roberta had been the McCain captured by the North Vietnamese, they’d have surrendered.” If sheer presence is any indication, that may not be much of a stretch.
Tomorrow: Giuliani's rescheduled, and rumor has it Palin will speak, though that hasn't been officially scheduled as of this hour. Updates here.
