Being otherwise occupied with the state primary date debate last night, I didn't get a chance to talk about the sparkling House floor debate over H406, a measure naming Ayden's post-Labor Day collard festival the state's first (and, so far, only contender for) Official Collard Festival.

Unlike the barbecue debate, there were no competing interests at stake.  But that didn't stop other reps from questioning bill sponsor Rep. Marian McLawhorn (D-Pitt). Her cosponsor, Durham Dem Paul Luebke, called collard literacy a "Yankee acculturation" test.   And Alamance Republican Cary Allred wanted to know whether the festival might inadvertently contribute to the global warming problem. (McLawhorn, perhaps wisely, declined to respond.)

In the end, the Official Collard Festival won unanimous House approval and is now off to the Senate, where Sen. Clark Jenkins is running a companion bill.  We'll see whether the Senate is as "green" as the House.

Lottery Year in Review

State lottery officials have released an interesting collection of factoids in honor of the NC Education Lottery's first anniversary, March 30th.  My favorite:
If you laid every instant scratch-off ticket sold (178,912,260 as of March 12, 2007) down side by side on the road, they would reach from Murphy to Manteo and back 15 times.
An interesting image, to be sure.  Especially when juxtaposed with this one:
There are 1,244 players that have won $1,000 or more as of March 8, 2007.
I could make a joke about a tax on the math-impaired, but hey, it's been done.

One more Lt. Gov. correction

Turns out Canton Mayor Pat Smathers has (sort of) declared his candidacy.  Not that he made any official announcement - that isn't really his style - but N&O blogger Ryan Teague Beckwith sent me this link to Smathers' web page.

I can tell you, though, that as of this afternoon, the Dems' last undeclared potential candidate, Surry Rep Jim Harrell, says he has not yet announced his candidacy.

Comments? Drop me a line.
