Virtue or necessity?

Presidential hopeful and former NC Senator John Edwards announced today he’s seeking public campaign financing for the Democratic primary.  His New Hampshire press secretary Kate Bedingfield told MSNBC today that it isn't a response to Edwards' lackluster fundraising. "The decision is about principle."

That would have been so much more convincing had Edwards not spent the past year trying to raise private money first.  But that hasn't been going so well. The campaign finance reports aren’t in yet, but the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder had this projection.

Some pundits say Edwards doesn’t need much money – just enough to win Iowa.  But with Clinton and Obama both out-fundraising him by at least 4 to 1, what are the odds either of the two frontrunners will drop out even if Edwards does win Iowa?  Slim, I’d guess. And 2008’s heavily frontloaded primary season favors the well-funded, since it costs a lot more to run simultaneous campaigns in four or five states than in one or two.

Gulley vs Teitleman: the sequel

Did I say Alan Teitleman was staying positive?  I’m taking it back.  Char-O’s Jim Morrill says the Mint Hill Republican hopeful offered him a slew of “current photos” of Representative Jim Gulley, Teitleman’s former boss and current primary opponent.

Some of the photos of the ailing 68-year-old incumbent are pretty unflattering, like the one Morrill posted here. Teitleman concedes he took that picture himself during the time he was working for Gulley, though he's quick to add he wasn’t being paid for his work on the campaign trail, where the photo was taken.  (But does that really matter? As Morrill put it, with help like this...)

Teitleman said tonight the only reason he sent out the Gulley photos is because Gulley told the Mint Hill paper that he never said he wasn’t running for reelection… and because the photo Gulley sent out with his release is very much out of date.  Teitleman says he intends to keep the rest of the campaign “focused on the issues.”  I guess we’ll see how that works out for both of them.
