As expected, a Columbus County grand jury handed down an indictment today against Tabor City Dem R.C. Soles. The longtime Senator is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. The charge stems from Soles' shooting of Kyle Blackburn this summer. Soles has said it was in self-defense, and that Blackburn was trying to break into his house.
If Soles is found guilty, he could face 15 to 31 months in prison. The indictment doesn't add any details, but if you want to read it, it's here (PDF).
Neither Senator Soles nor his attorney Joe Cheshire were immediately available for comment. The AG's office has said it won't comment on the case till it's resolved.
Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight issued the following statement:
I don't know much about the details of this case except that our system of justice will run its course. But I do know a lot about R.C. Soles, who works harder on behalf of the little guy than anyone I have ever known. He has been an outstanding member of the Senate and an effective and dedicated representative for the people of his district.
Soles has already said he won't run for re-election this fall. He's the longest-serving lawmaker in state history.
Comments? Drop me a line.
