Obama’s speech
Wow. That’s all I’ve got on that one. I don’t think I’ve sat still for that long in years. Yes, his delivery was amazing, but I hope his speechwriters get a HUGE raise – that was some gorgeous writing. On CNN, Carl Bernstein called it the greatest acceptance speech since Kennedy's.
The punditocracy has been saying this would be the pivotal speech of Obama's campaign. I don’t know if that’s true –I tend to believe the most important speech is the last one voters hear before they hit the polls – but if they’re right, he hit it out of the park. I mean, when’s the last time you saw tears of joy at a political convention?
Best lines:
- "We are here because we love this country too much to let the next 4 years look just like the last 8. On Nov 4th, we must stand up and say eight is enough."
- "I don’t believe Senator McCain doesn’t care what’s going on in the lives of Americans. I just believe he doesn’t know."
- "John McCain likes to say he’ll follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell, but he won’t even follow him to the cave where he lives."
- "What the naysayers don’t understand is that this election has never been about me. It’s about you."
The transcript is here.
Obama also gave a nice opening hat tip to Hillary Clinton, and CSPAN's camera spent a lot of time on Michelle and the kids, who couldn’t have looked any more fabulous. Bonus: Pittsboro's Pamella Cash-Roper was one of the people who spoke on the big stage before Obama's speech. She got a standing ovation. You go, girl! If you missed it, the transcript of her remarks are here.
Next up...
I’d hate to be John McCain’s speechwriter tonight. McCain is a good speaker, but he isn’t in Obama's league, and he's never claimed to be. That’s fine with his base. But the undecided voters both sides are after in this race can’t help but compare the two, and Obama’s speech tonight will be a very tough act to follow.
Catching up
John Edwards’ friends may not be speaking to him, and his former supporters may be unwilling to speak his name aloud in Denver, but he’s back out on the speaking circuit -- with higher prices now than before he admitted he cheated on his wife. The guy redefines shamelessness.
Speaking of shameless, former state Rep Thomas Wright had nothing to say after a jury convicted him of his fourth felony yesterday. Wright’s only reaction to the verdict was a dismissive shrug. Char-O's David Ingram has the rest.
Who could blame him? Judge Donald Stephens sentenced Wright to 6 to 8 months, but Wake DA Colon Willoughby agreed to let the time run concurrent with the 6-year sentence Wright's serving now for bank and charity fraud, so the net effect of the conviction is diddly-over-squat. Defrauding a bank for $150K gets you 4+ years in jail, but ripping off the little people for $150K is no big deal. No wonder voter confidence is so low.
