Thurs: Class acts

I don't want to look like I'm piling on in picking on the Republicans today, but hey -- it's not our fault they're giving the press so much material to work with...
Stay Classy
William Ayers, the “washed-up old terrorist” McCain said last night he doesn’t care about, is coming to a telephone near you. The McCain-Palin campaign has launched a third round of negative robocalls in NC starring – yep, you guessed it.
“Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home and killed Americans. And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democratic allies lack the judgment to lead our country. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee at 202-863-8500.”
Here's a video version on YouTube (HT: HuffPo). And yes, CNN has confirmed the GOP is behind the calls, which are showing up in swing states everywhere.
The Obama campaign held a teleconference today with two prominent state Dems - NC Sen. Majority Leader Tony Rand and Congressman Brad Miller - speaking out against the robocall campaign. Rand had the quote of the day.

Stay Classy, Part II
Sounds like today's Palin rally at Elon hit a new low, at least for the media: The N&R's Joe Killian was physically assaulted. Killian writes about it here; Binker has the onlooker's account.
Watch for this one on CNN. Hate speech might be protected under the 1st Amendment, but assault isn't.
This is just thuggery, plain and simple, and if you did it on the street, you'd go to jail. If this had happened on a street, I'd bet you most of the folks who came to Palin's event today would've accosted Killian's attacker. But mob mentality is an amazing thing. No one stepped in to stop the guy from leaving, much less to intervene. And the GOP wonders why its base is getting such a bad reputation?
Stay Classy, Part III
The GOP Women’s club in the “Inland Empire” (CA) sent out a newsletter featuring Barack Obama on a cartoon “food stamp,” surrounded by fried chicken, ribs, and watermelon. Chairwoman Diana Fedele, who sent it out, insisted she thought “it was just food” and says her past support for Republican Alan Keyes is proof she isn’t racist.
Maybe it's something in the Golden State air. Just yesterday, the Sacramento County GOP had to edit its website to remove a graphic saying the only difference between Osama and Obama is "a little B.S."
"Whenever you get a large rally of 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 people, you're going to have some fringe peoples. You know that. And I've -- and we've always said that that's not appropriate."
Okay, but when did county party leaders become "fringe"? CA Republicans moved quickly to repudiate both transgressors, but so far, the McCain campaign hasn't followed suit.
Springing a Leak
Life ain’t easy tonight for “Joe the Plumber.” Joe, actually Samuel “Joe” Wurzelbacher, isn’t licensed or registered as a plumber. He owes $1200 in back taxes. The company he wants to buy is making $100K, not $250K, but it doesn’t matter anyway because he’s nowhere near "getting ready to buy" it on his $40K salary.
It’s almost enough to make you feel sorry for the guy – that is, if he hadn’t tried to cash in on the spotlight with press conferences and morning TV interviews today.
The lefty blogosphere was abuzz with conspiracy theories that the plumber was a GOP plant. Give it a rest, folks. Wurzelbacher actually lives on the street where the Youtube clip was filmed. Obama just happened to walk by his house during a recent Ohio canvassing. Unless GOP psychics figured out years ago they'd need to buy that house, the conspiracy folks are pretty much out of luck here.
Still, it’s pretty clear the McCain camp outran its headlights on this one. Even as “Joe’s” real story was hitting the headlines today, the GOP had already rolled out a new "Joe the Plumber" ad starring Wurzelbacher. Today's developments pretty much guarantee you won’t be seeing the ad on TV anytime soon, but you can watch it here. Seriously, does no one on that campaign know how to use Google?
