Sunday: What to read

There's a lot of good reading in the papers this holiday weekend. Some highlights:
Honeymoon over? NCGOP chair Tom Fetzer and vice-chair Timothy Johnson are sparring over an incident at a party event last month. Fetzer says Johnson engaged in inappropriate conduct. Johnson says he's being cut out of the GOP loop, at least in part, because of his race. The N&O's Ben Niolet has the details.
Charlotte’s Karen Garloch has an excellent story on laid-off workers looking to social services for help with health care.
At the Star-News, Gareth McGrath chronicles the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Floyd. Even (or maybe especially) for those of us who didn’t live through it, it’s an excellent read.
Greensboro’s Mark Binker looks at the rise of a new, legal version of video poker, “sweepstakes machines.”
Also at GNR, Lorraine Ahearn says red ink and red tape in Raleigh are hobbling local mental health services.
VaPilot’s Jeff Hampton has the latest on the battle over the Navy’s bid to put an outlying landing field in NC.
Charlotte’s Bruce Henderson says the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is in trouble, partly because of kids’ waning interest in outdoor activity. (Note to kids: there is no "Wii Black Bear. " Yet.)
Asheville columnist John Boyle takes a tongue-in-cheek shot at “Shulerisms.”
And Char-O's Jack Betts has an interesting look back at the “Lost Colony” fraud of 1937.
Comments? Drop me a line.
