Sunday Update: Embarassing

Obama arrived at the barbecue joint around 12:30 p.m., where an older and majority white clientele of several dozen were eating lunch after church services. Many patrons applauded as he walked into the diner, but Diane Fanning, 54, began yelling “Socialist, socialist, socialist — get out of here!”
Obama did not look directly at her, as she was across the diner, but it was loud enough that he most likely heard her.
Politico reports Obama later went over to Fanning’s table and introduced himself, but she refused to shake his hand -- even after he replied to her concerns about a conspiracy to make Canada, the US, and Mexico into one country. More here.
So NC is now the state where reporters are assaulted at political rallies and where conspiracy theorists shout insults at visiting presidential candidates. I couldn’t be prouder. When did hatefulness get to be hip around here? Did I miss something?
Then again...
It could be worse. Check out this video from a Palin rally in PA, uploaded by KeystoneProgress.org:
It’s hard to watch this stuff. In fact, it’s enough to make me wonder what country and what century we’re in. It also makes me feel sorry for my good, kind, unprejudiced conservative friends. I can’t imagine what it’s like for them to watch these people drag their party through the mud.
Addenda
I was remiss earlier today in failing to mention WUNC’s own coverage of the presidential parade through the state. Leoneda Inge covered the Palin rally Thursday at Elon, and Yasmeen Khan will have coverage of Obama’s visit to Fayetteville and McCain’s visit to Concord. Listen for it Monday morning.
Comments? Drop me a line.
