Can it really be almost over?  Three days to go...

Palin in Raleigh

GOP Veep candidate Sarah Palin made her fourth visit to NC for a rally last night at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.  WUNC's Dave DeWitt was there - I'll add a link here when I get one.  Update:  Hear it here.

Meantime, check out print coverage from WS-J’s Romoser, N&O’s Beckwith, and the AP’s Mike Baker.  Or if you’d rather cut out the middlemen, you can watch the speech at WRAL.com.

Barack Obama has a final rally scheduled for 5:30 Monday afternoon at UNC Charlotte. Details here.

Scene setters

  • Char-O’s Clay Barbour spent the afternoon in line with early voters on the final day of one stop voting.
  • The N&O’s Lynn Bonner has a great story on GOTV ground wars.
  • McClatchy’s Lisa Zagarolli and the N&O's Rob Christensen check in on the final days of the Senate race.
  • Charlotte's Mark Johnson and the N&O's Ben Niolet do the same for the governor’s race.
  • And Asheville’s Jordan Schrader updates the Lt. Gov race.

A little deeper

The N&O's Rob Christensen looks back on the craziest year ever in NC politics, while Char-O's Jack Betts outlines how we got here.

Fay-O’s Chick Jacobs says for sheer nastiness, this election can’t hold a candle to 1898

Not that some aren’t trying, of course. The Dole campaign tells Dome their reason for pulling the "Godless" ad had nothing to do with the avalanche of negative press it generated.  Sure.

And in Craven County, a casket with anti-Obama signs was set up outside an early polling place.  Still staying classy, NC.  WRAL has pix.  NAACP President Rev.William Barber weighed in Saturday afternoon.

Greensboro's Mark Binker looks at how last month’s economic chaos affected messaging in the governor’s race.  My favorite analogy:

"If the governor's race were a game of roulette, Perdue would have scattered her chips on a bunch of numbers, hoping to win no matter what slot on the wheel the little ball bounced into. But McCrory placed his bets on only a few issues, and the economy hit big."

I’ve been thinking for the past couple of months that the main reason this race is so close is because Perdue spent months focusing on education.  That’d be a pretty safe strategy for an NC Democrat any other year, but not this one.

Just for fun:

McCain and “Palin” (Tina Fey) did QVC last night on Saturday Night Live.

"Look, would I rather be on three major networks? Of course," McCain said. "But I'm a true maverick -- a Republican without money."

Cindy McCain makes a cameo. Great stuff, especially the Joe Biden action figure...

And an update:  Republican Pat McCrory narrowly edged Democrat Bev Perdue in yesterday's Statesville pumpkin "chuck-off."  Details here.
