Musical Chairs
The State Dems have a new leader - former state treasurer candidate David Young. As recently as Thursday night, party faithful were still debating Young’s position on collective bargaining. The scuffle even bled over onto a Dem Facebook group, where Jay Ovittore went head to head with Andrew Bates over Bates’ endorsement of Young.
In the end, though, the election went off without a hitch. Young won with an easy majority on the first ballot – not surprising given his broad support among party leaders, including Governor Perdue and Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, both of whom attended yesterday’s meeting at NCSU. Asheville’s Jordan Schrader has details at his blog, and Jack Hagel also had a wrap-up at the the N&O.
NC Republicans are still working on their new chair. You can get a sense of the debate over the party’s direction at the new conservative blog Redsurgence, which launched on Inauguration Day.
In Ink:
Charlotte’s Mark Johnson reports the chiropractor copay provision that got former Speaker Jim Black into trouble is back in the mix this session, in a new House bill by Watauga Dem Cullie Tarleton.
Fay-O’s Paul Woolverton looks at a new campaign reform push headed by Rick Glazier.
Charlotte’s Jack Betts has nice things to say about Gov Bev Perdue’s first 21 days in office: “disciplined pragmatism” with a “steady hand.”
Yesterday was the deadline for W-2s to go out, and the N&O’s Sabine Vollmer has a timely reminder about this year’s first-ever state Earned Income Tax Credit.
ICYMI, Charlotte’s Jim Morrill says former Gov candidate Pat McCrory’s got a new gig.
On the Air:
Change is afoot at NBC-17. "At Issue" is reportedly ending, despite Kim Genardo’s year of hard work to turn the weekly talker into must-see political TV. Staffing pressures necessitated the change. The good news is you’ll still see plenty of Kim, who’ll be on the street (Jones St., too) as much as ever. NCNN’s Matt Willoughby and I were her first press corps guests, and her last, too, on today’s show. Update: I'll post a link here when they put the show online.
And UNC-TV's Leg Week in Review is back for the session. Mark Binker, Gary Robertson, and I broke out the crystal ball on this week's show. I'll post a link when they make one. UPDATE: Watch it here.
Worth a Read:
- Char-O’s David Perlmutt highlights some of the everyday people whose “firsts” helped end segregation in Charlotte.
- The N&O’s Anne Blythe had a frontpager on Erick Daniels, a man who served seven years for a crime he didn’t commit.
- At the Virginian-Pilot, Cate Kozak says Sir Walter Raleigh’s the subject of a new PR campaign.
And... Go Steelers!
