Sorry so quiet around here lately. We’ve just lost a member of the family – Poppet the Lab, who was only 13 days shy of her 14th birthday when she passed away today.
It’s always hard to lose a pet, but Poppet’s especially tough. She was a great, sweet, goofy, happy dog without a mean bone in her body. Any baby cat or dog in the house was her foster child.
She was in ridiculously good shape for her age until these last few days, when she went downhill very quickly. When she couldn’t stand up this weekend, it made the decision easier, relatively speaking. But it’s never easy to lose such a good old friend. I’ll miss her terribly.
Doing the numbers
The latest Elon Poll out Friday shows the GOP still has an edge among NC voters. But the latest PPP poll shows Obama even with McCain, and Hagan with a five-point lead over Dole. PPP's Tom Jensen says Obama can thank the economy for the bump -- a pretty big bump, according to Char-O’s Doug Smith, who doesn’t find much good news in Charlotte’s latest economic data.
Meantime, a new AP poll puts a new spin on how race could influence the November election. Ron Fournier and Trevor Johnson have the details.
Trail Mix
The AP’s Mike Baker reports the McCain campaign is beefing up its paid staffing levels in NC from 20 to 30 – a sign, he says, of concern about what should be a pretty safe state for the GOP candidate.
On the other side of the ticket, Kansas Gov Kathleen Sebelius stumped for Obama at an Asheville coffee shop Friday. AC-T’s Josh Boatwright has the details. At the other end of the state, the V-P’s Lauren King says former MO Sen Jean Carnahan will be campaigning for Obama out east tomorrow and Tuesday.
Greensboro’s Mark Binker says President Bush is coming back to NC later this month for a private fundraiser. State and local Republicans may not be rushing to appear with him.
The N&O’s Rob Christensen has a comparison of the two campaigns’ ground/air games in NC.
The voters
W-SJ’s James Romoser has a nice piece on the growing rolls of independent voters in NC.
Fay-O’s Francis Gilpin checks in on a GOP voter registration drive in Fayetteville.
Closer to home
Greensboro's Mark Binker has some bonus video goodness at the Decision 2008 blog – clips of the paper’s ed board interviews with Dole and Hagan, and McCrory and Perdue.
The Insider’s Scott Mooneyham thinks state-level candidates ought to be talking more about the failure of big incentives deals for Dell, Goodyear, and Bruton Smith.
