Not just lobbying firepower

Longtime NC Home Builders Association lobbyist Paul Wilms warned readers of today's N&O it may be time to overthrow the government.
In a letter to the editor titled “Arms at the Ready,” Wilms called the health care bill “socialism,” noting that “our Founding Fathers observed that when government ceases to listen to the will of the people, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it.”
"At the hands of successive Congresses dating to Roosevelt's New Deal, Americans have suffered a "long train of abuses and usurpations (designed) to reduce them under absolute despotism," and if it continues, Americans have the right and the duty "to throw off such government," peaceably if possible, but by force if necessary.
"I hope that Americans will have the wisdom to vote in November such that armed conflict is avoided, but if force ultimately becomes necessary, I pray that Americans will have the courage, faith and determination of our Founding Fathers."
You can read the whole letter here.
Wilms’ call to arms came as a surprise to many lobbyists and staffers who worked with him over the years. He lobbied for NCHBA from 1990 to 2008, becoming Director of Government Relations in 2000, and was still registered as a lobbyist for the group through December 2009.
But before his lobbying career, Wilms worked for the state. He joined the Division of Environmental Management in 1976, becoming director of the department in 1985. He left in 1989 for the NCHBA job. Wilms’ Facebook page lists his current employer as Wilms Government Relations, but the firm isn’t listed as a corporation or with the lobbying division at the NC Secretary of State’s office.
Dome got confirmation from Wilms that he indeed wrote the letter. He told Dome he’s currently working with Bikers for Christ and teaching motorcycle safety to high schoolers.
