Monday: The short list

Hope everyone was refreshed by the three-day weekend. There’s a whole lot going on today.
Budget vote #1 is set for tonight in both chambers. I’ll have a story on that for the morning.
Former US Senator Jesse Helms’ viewing is from 10am to 8pm in Raleigh. The N&O has details here. WUNC’s Dave DeWitt will be covering today’s viewing and tomorrow’s funeral – listen for him this evening and tomorrow morning. I’ll post links here when I get them.
Obama’s in Charlotte for a stop (invite-only, sorry) at a local middle school. Char-O’s Steve Lyttle has the scoop on what the Dem presidential candidate will talk about.
From the Sunday papers
Helms, Helms, Helms:
- The N&O had wall-to-wall coverage, including Rob Christensen's piece on Helms as a political operator.
- Charlotte’s Jack Betts talks about Helms’ record on race.
- The AP’s Larry Margasak documents some of the quotes and positions that made Helms famous, or infamous, depending on your point of view.
- The AP’s Gary Robertson has more on Helms’ place in the pantheon of southern Conservatives
In non-Helms-related news…
Greensboro had two nice articles on pending legislation – Mark Binker covered the gun sales bill, and Taft Wireback explained the state tire contract debate.
Asheville had a double header, too. Jordan Schrader detailed the debate over Charles Thomas’s bill requiring the state to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles. And Mike McWilliams reported on Western NC’s reaction to the proposed statewide drought plan.
Freedom Newspapers’ Barry Smith and I talked budget, drought, and etc. with Kelly McCullen on UNC's Leg Week. It's not posted online yet, but I'll link it here when it is. Update: Watch it here.
The AP's Gary Robertson reports Gov Mike Easley's having a rough final year in the Mansion.
Comments? Drop me a line.
