Save the date...and buy a t-shirt, already
Yes, it's that time again -- the annual press skits are set for this Wednesday night at Temple Beth-Or on Creedmoor Rd. in Raleigh. Admission is free. Cash bar opens at 7:00; the show starts after the second round or 7:45, whichever comes first. Be there or be mocked. (Or both.)
Meantime, if you'd like to ensure the skits' return in 2009, drop by the press room and pick up this year's t-shirt. (That's how we pay for this shindig.) The shirts will be on sale at the skits, too, but some sizes are limited, so don't procrastinate.
Roommates
Over at Dome, Ryan Teague Beckwith reports New Hanover Dem Senator Julia Boseman has moved out of lobbyist Teresa Kostrzewa's place.
Boseman was renting a room from Kostrzewa - a deal she says got approval from ethics counsel Walker Reagan. But Boseman's campaign told Dome she ended the arrangement "out of respect for Mrs. Kostrzewa and her family." (Boseman's tough reelection fight apparently had nothing to do with it.)
As it turns out, Boseman isn't the only lawmaker bunking with a lobbyist. Dome reports Cleveland Republican Debbie Clary shares a condo with lobbyist and former member Connie Wilson. Clary says she and Wilson are longtime friends, and says the State Ethics Commission signed off on the deal.
Both lawmakers insisted there's nothing improper or unethical about their roommate arrangements. Clary told Dome that Wilson "never even lobbied me." That may well be true. But from here, it looks like a classic case of Beltline Bubble syndrome...and Clary and Boseman just wrote their opponents' campaign ads for them.
Tuesday's hotlist
This is by no means a comprehensive list - there's a ton going on Tuesday. But here's some of what I'll be watching:
House side:
J2 has the involuntary annexation moratorium.
J1 takes up a ban on kids riding in the beds of pickup trucks.
Finance considers letting charities serve up the hard stuff.
Transportation goes back to the state tire contract. (Correction: this one's on Wed)
Senate Side
On the floor - the MySpace sex offender bill, plus the Gang Prevention bill comes back for concurrence. (Odds on the latter are somewhere south of good.)
Finance takes up an Ed proposal that NCAE considers a stealth voucher program.
Commerce considers requiring carbon monoxide detectors in rentals.
Upstairs in the Auditorium:
Expect a decent crowd at the 10am meeting on Immigration Reform and the E-Verify Electronic Employment Verification System.
Then at 11:30 WED., former US Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders will talk about alternative medicine -- the kind you roll yourself. (Reminder: it is a non-smoking building. Just FYI.)
Comments? Drop me a line.
