No Swett
Charlotte's Mark Johnson reports UNC Board of Governors appointee Purnell Swett won't take his seat after his criminal record sparked controversy. You can find my earlier report on Swett here (second item).
State law bars felons from the BOG, but Swett had pleaded to a lesser misdemeanor charge. Johnson reports Hackney's staff and folks at UNC were trying to figure out whether Swett was in fact eligible to serve. Swett's announcement saves them the trouble.
Wright digs in
No similar news so far from New Hanover Dem Thomas Wright, despite mounting calls for his resignation over the past few days, most notably from the WIlmington Star and the Wilmington Journal. Wright has said he doesn't see a reason to step down. Meantime, his case has been referred to the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee, where there's apparently little enthusiasm about having to handle it at all.
And one entrance
State Treasurer Richard Moore kicks off his 2008 gubernatorial campaign tomorrow evening in his hometown of Oxford. Moore becomes the first official Democratic candidate. His website is here, but it doesn't launch till tomorrow His erstwhile competitor, Lt Gov Bev Perdue, has been raising money hand over fist, but has yet to officially toss her hat into the ring.
More later.
