Mon: Super Bowl for Dogs

Why, oh why did President Obama schedule a press conference during the first hour of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show? It's the Super Bowl of the dog world. (If you've ever seen the movie "Best in Show," Westminster is the event it parodies.) Thank goodness for DVRs.
Anyway, if you’re looking for local talent to cheer for, you've got plenty to choose from. I put together this list of NC competitors, very roughly arranged by geographical area. (Note: The list isn't complete because not all owners choose to release their info to the media.) The breed competition is fierce, and most probably won’t make it to the televised group judging. But hey, you never know.
Greensboro groomer/handler Chris Manelopoulos is one of the best bets. He’s a regular in the poodle ring, but this year, he’s going with a wash-and-wear breed -- a greyhound. Greensboro’s Robert Lopez reports Manelopoulos and his wife, Rachel Corbin, are also competing against each other for a national groomer award.
A Greensboro middle schooler will also be in the show. 12-year-old Chaz McDonnell is showing his pointer, Rigel, and he’s competing in junior showmanship -- he made it to the finals last year. Good luck, Chaz!
Got a favorite of your own? Drop me a line.
